NEWSPULSE_RSS_GOOGLE_TRY_DIRECT_FIRST— set to0to skip the default direct-first attempt.NEWSPULSE_RSS_PROXY_FALLBACKS— comma-separated proxy URLs used after the source proxy andNEWSPULSE_RSS_PROXYin the Google News chain.
These apply to Google News RSS, not to every source type globally.
When it matters
If outbound policy blocks Google hosts, direct-first may always fail—turn it off and use your proxies. If direct access is reliable, defaults may spare your proxy capacity.
